The school: An overview
The Discipleship Training School is about more than just doing good – if that was our aim we would fail, because deep down we are selfish people. Instead, it is about truly learning to see the world through God’s eyes, by drawing close to Him and learning to walk in His ways. When we do that, He will show us His heart and His desires, which will empower us to minister in His love to others.
Jesus and compassion: Several times, the Bible records that Jesus had compassion on people.
In Matthew 9:35-38 it says: “Jesus went through all the towns and villages, teaching in their synagogues, proclaiming the good news of the kingdom and healing every disease and sickness. When He saw the crowds, he had compassion on them, because they were harassed and helpless, like sheep without a shepherd. Then he said to his disciples, ‘The harvest is plentiful but the workers are few. Ask the Lord of the harvest, therefore, to send out workers into His harvest field.”
And in Mark 1:40-41 it says: “A man with leprosy came to Him and begged Him on His knees, ‘If you are willing, you can make me clean.’ Jesus was filled with compassion. He reached out his hand and touched the man. ‘I am willing,’ He said. ‘Be clean!’ Immediately the leprosy left him and he was cleansed.”
Jesus was no stranger to ministering from compassion. He could do so because His heart was always close to God. If we want to become more like Jesus, we need to learn to minister like Jesus did, not for personal gain, not for the world to see us, but out of love and from a heart of compassion – from a heart that understands God’s ways and the situation someone else is in.
As a theme verse for this DTS we have chosen Micah 6:8.
“He has told you, O man, what is good; and what does the Lord require of you but to do justice, and to love mercy, and to walk humbly with your God?”
We have chosen this verse because we believe that it shows us some key aspects of how God wants our actions towards others to be displayed (in humility) and what he wants to achieve through them (justice, mercy & kindness).
Throughout the Bible we can see God’s heart for these themes:
Amos 5:24 – “But let justice roll on like a river, righteousness like a never-failing stream!”
Psalm 33:5 – “The Lord loves righteousness and justice; the earth is full of his unfailing love.”
Proverbs 29:7 – “The righteous care about justice for the poor, but the wicked have no such concern.”
Proverbs 28:5 – “Evil men do not understand justice, but those who seek the Lord understand it fully.”
Zechariah 7:9 – “This is what the Lord Almighty says: ‘Administer true justice; show mercy and compassion to one another.”
Isaiah 1:17 – “Learn to do right! Seek justice, encourage the oppressed. Defend the cause of the fatherless, plead the case of the widow.”
Isaiah 61:8a – “For I, the Lord, love justice.”
Our theme for the DTS is friendship with God. When we draw close to Him, He shows us more of His heart. As we grow in our walk with Him, we’ll learn more and more how to also reach out to others.
Compassion will be the focus of our DTS.
We want to learn how to minister in love and from a heart of compassion and we want to see more of God’s heart of compassion towards the world. From that place of compassion, we also want to find our place in this world and get an idea of the people and places that God might want to send us to. And whether that is in long-term ministry oversees, or in college or as a full-time mom, we believe that knowing God’s heart of compassion will help us no matter where we’ll go.
